Phase3 : Proliferate ; Saimai Thanjira Vimonanupong

PHASE 3
PROLIFERATE

In this last phase of the project, we are assigned to reimagined the brands by taking the identity of the selected brands to create a new space or building. First of all, I started off with the research on what the 3 brands have in common. What i found is that what they all have in common are the sense of luxury, the level of customization, exceptional service, and lastly, the environmental awareness. Also there are similarity between brands such as the use of vernacular materials and the way brands keep contact with customers via music festival or a process email etc.

What I then chose to do with the brand is to to redefined the luxury bag brand of 1 atelier into another chain brand called Atelier Envase which creates a customize bag with dynamic new design and will also have a shopfront to let customer have a closerexperience to the product

Also the Environmental concern- use the leftovers leather (make full use of the pieces of the leather) Uniqueness In the design of the bag and material, Exceptional service, Lower price cause by the location of the shop =right at the marina and the use of material
The shopfront for taking in the leather and the palce to display material. The product can then be sent to the customer when they are back at their home destination conveniently, or to the next shop at the next marina if they are travelling by a yatch, it does not only convenient for the buyer but the bag is also the keeper of memories of the trip or of the place they went to as well. The Vernacularity and the style of the region were also added as the shop will be situated in a different country and using local material in order to creates the bag so that the bag will contain the identity of each destination the shop situated.

The Context plate here shows the chosen site. The site is the island of Pulau Brani which is a small island in between Singapore main land and the Sentosa island. The island is relatively small with an area of 1.2 sqkm. and are now the container site and a marina. and are now  Singapore itself is in the Malakkan straits - which is a trading area since old times. To put a shop there would benefits in the ability to access the material in lower price and also took advantage in the location because it is situated near the marina and the famous holiday island of Sentosa which is flurished  with tourists.

The program of the building then being talked through the diagram above. This diagram shows what the program of the building is according to the floe of people. The blue people are the staffs and the red people are the customers. We can see from the disgram that on the first floor, the crowd of customer and staffs are completely separated as we have two areas dedicated for each. On the second floor we will see that there's only the customer there because on the second floor is the material library where customer will get to engage with the material and then slipped into the transition to the third floor. This floor is where the flow of the staff and the flow of the customer will collide. The artisans will be working on this floor which peopla can also walk along and watch as their bags are being made. Once the payment is done, the customer can choose to chill out on the balcony overlooking the marina and the Sentosa island before taking the outdoor stair out.

Here is the site plan showing the area and the attractions of the area.

A site model showing geographical elements of the island. How the water channel are located. and the terraiun atmostphere.

here are the floor plans of the building. the first floor plan shows the 2 area so f the staff and the customer. The staffs area are at the outer left corner of the building where they can sort raw materials into categories before display them in the first floor exhibition space. The space in the first floor can also be movable according to the partition in order to create different types of space for different occasion. The first floor then are filled with the display material which is the biobased paper as a structure creating a terrrainiun of structural form to display the bag. This also talk about the varnacularity and the ideas of being environmental friendly.

Walking up the ramp, the second floor is the floor which has a very low ceiling in order to stay close to human scale. This floor is an open air material library which customers are free to walk around and experience the material of the region. In order for the customer to get to the 3rd floor, the customer have to embedded themselves through the leather wall, flipping and opening util found the void large enough to get through the wall in order to walk up the stairs to the third floor which is an artisan space where customer will order their bags with selected materials and then walk aroung to see the process of the bag being made and even get to talk to the artisans themselfs for if they have any question. The customer then can lounge and relax in the balcony overlooking the marina and the Sentosa island as to celebrate the new bag and to cherish the view.

THANJIRA VIMONANUPONG : METERIAL MEMES

PHASE II

MATERIAL MEMES

In this phase, we were assigned to experience on the selected material from the chosen brands in phase one. Then combined them together to create a component, then later on a context describing future situation of these 3 brands and material selected.
The selected brands and material are;

Kuoni : Vernacularity and exotic patterns in the stores
Blohm+Voss : Bio-based material and Dynamic forms
1 Atelier : Leather and styles

I then combine each material in each brands together as shown below:
Kuoni x Blohm+Voss : Vernacularity x bio-based material x dynamic form
Kuoni x 1 Atelier : exotic patterns x Leather

I choose to experiment on Bio-based material, vernacularity and dynamic form as an experiment on  a handmade paper based on vegetables. I chose 3 vegetables to to experiment which is, first, pandan, chayote and asparagus.

The paper then being made to imitate the form of the wire by spray the water on then blow dry or let dry in the sun, creating a form that is both dynamic and gives a form of space.

Lights were added in order to study more about the form and to give the phenomenological sense to the structure.

In the component plates, I choose to explore the form more , to create the surface of the structure as to be a shelter that accommodate people according to their scale.

The second Experiment is on Leather. We see leather as a one big piece of pliable material, bending and twisting. But leather have to space for air, or it is not airy.
I then choose to cut the non-bleached leather into two by two centimeter pieces, then combine them together using a sewing method that will helps to create a movable surface structure. And by using wires, the structure can bend and twisted, creating various forms.

I then experiment on creating various form of bags from this surface structure and also to experiment with light.

The last context plates talks about the future situation of these 3 brands. How they may provide the hub for exchange and meeting. If looking back to the context plate of the first phase, we will see as it represents how we choose to customize for ourself. but in this plate, it shows how we have center to trade, and we distribute our good to the center to share with others.

BRAND GENETICS

KUONI
BLOHM+VOSS
1ATELIER

In this phase of Arch Design I, we were assigned to extract the Genes, norms, and Memes out of 3 selected brand to find the similarity and difference, also to look into the approach towards the future of the 3 selected brands.

The first brand is Kuoni Travel. Kuoni Travel is a luxury travel company ehich has been operated since 1906 in London, England. Starting from the logos, as the Gene, the logos of Kuoni is minimal with bold text in black. Along with a minimal clean-cut and user- friendly website to accommodate large age gap of customers. (Between 30-75) The company mainly focus on the beautiful destination and the exceptional service they provide. They also have their headquarter office at Zurich,Switzerland. Kuoni represents their brand's luxuriusness through the way they customize each trips to be as their customer's wish. And also how the experience of the customer begins at the store, not the trip.
Kuoni also have phone applications, instagram updates, partnership hotels around the world and a complimentary champagne! Kuoni als raise awareness in variations and are able to arrange a trip for people with special needs.

The second brand is Blohm+Voss Shipyards. This company is a shipmaking company since 1877. They also own a shipyard in Hamburg. Looking into their logos, the color blue represents ocean, the Blohm+Voss written in white is the name of the 2 founder of the company. Also mr.Blohm is a business man whlist mr. Voss in an engineer. So, combining business and engineering will resulted in a futuristic and luxurius design, with engineering preciseness and out of this world luxury. The website is well designed, full of informations, easy to read and luxurius. The company has been running for more than hundreds years now and if we look dated back into history, they first started off with a dock inHamburg, then during WWII, the company supported the Nazis in making ships. One of the most notable warship are the "Bismarck" After war, in the jet age, the company have a diversity to aircraft, but soon faded away and started to make and oil drill in the ocean. The company then now collaborated with the luxurius yatch making company called Lurssen and are now building notable yatch on the same dock.
The docks nowadays are being turned into a music festival called "ELBJAZZ" once a year to let people get into the place where it is unseen to them. However, the company can be seen as a hard to reach one due to the product that are not very in our everyday life.

The logo is clean and minimal, representing 1 as the one and only. the bags are customizable, reachable, Luxury and unique. The capitalisation, the close connection with customer with the company and their product with progress email, and also represents the style of New York and the Architecture within the city. They also have instagram updates which allows you to see their new design or even contact them for and question.

MATERIALS

The next 3 plates are the material that has been chosen from each company starting with Kuoni. In this company, I decide to choose the store materials and the experience of the customers that starts once you step a foot into one of their stores. The stores of Kuoni are filled with uniqe elements represents the exoticness and oriental. The main material seen in the stores are leather, wood, concrete and glass. Also the murals or paintings.

For Blohm+Voss, the material chosen are the material that they use to make ships and also looking into the futuristic approach of it which is a "Bio-Based" material Also looking into the design of the ships from start till now, how the forms are changing and how we approach them in a futuristic yet luxurius way.

For 1 Atelier, The most relevant material is Leather. Both authentic and not also the olred felt and their environmental concern in order leather and felt only one at a time to create least waste. Another material chosen from this company is the style and the way of living of the people in New York and also the Architecture of the city that inspires the design of the bag.

THE SEVENTH PLATE

The 7th plate here represents a futuristic approach of the world where we surround us with everything and we can choose to customize it in our own way. Talking about the level of customization that are what's common in  this ways that we are all adapting to the culture of non-luxury but rather modest and reachable. With the help of technological advancements.
