The circulations mapping inside the Carnival Cruise illustrates both with and without a medallion experiences. The ones with Medallion are creating shortcut experiences.


From the previous phases, the two brands Carnival Corporation, the cruise service along with Citymapper, the application which provides the fastest routes for travel at real time, were developed as an extension of the Carnival Corporation brand and became 'Carnival in the City'.

Carnival in the city's main idea is focusing on create a shortcut experiencing in the city for both cruiser and locals which will not only accommodate the cruiser but also a great opportunity to promote the brand to the bigger market.

A market is considered to be a place with diversity. It is where different types of people gathering, observing new things and exchange ideas.

One side of  Binnenalster lake in Hamburg was chosen to be a site for a new Hamburg city's market where local food products from different parts of Hamburg are brought together in a same place.

From the material studies, the two brands have the same material in organizing flows and from the circulation mapping in both the cruise, the sponge experimentation and the Citymapper application it is clearly shown that circulations are normally curving, adaptable and asymmetrical therefore, the structures are inspired to be the curving structures and were categorized into four types according to function and space of each and to support the flows of people within the area.




All the four types came from a simple single box which had been designed with the positive and negative space between top and bottom corners creating different curves with different function within each structure.  For walking area where is supposed to be the market area is under shadow and the stop-by area are having openings to let the light and wind flows into the spaces.

    Type A 's structure is mainly support the market function where it needs lots of walking space.At the same time, type A has a center stop-by area for people to chitchatting and enjoying their bought products from the market.
    Type B has a diagonal walking area and stop-by area at the two corners. 
    Type C is similar to type B but has more walking area with one corner stop-by area.
    Type D is the most opened type to support the stop-by area.

The arrangement of the structures are according to the site. The structures are all placed on the added platforms which transform the steps space into a flat space. The area are divided into 3 main areas; from the left where is the closest area to both underground and pier is designed to mostly market area to welcome lots of people come through, the center area is the mixed area between market and stop-by area and the right area is mostly stop-by area for people to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Each area is divided by the steps way which leads to the lake. 


The flows within the area is showing the ways people move and is resemble the sponge's solid and void spaces from the previous phase.

The plan, sections and elevations are clearly show the solid and void areas.


As this market place is initially designed for cruiser to have a shortcut experience of the stop-by city within the limited time. Therefore to support the connection of people(the cruiser and the locals) and  the lake atmosphere as much as possible some of the structures are translucent.

The axonometric drawing illustrates the connection from the street into the structures and to the lake.

    As there are none of physical materials in all of my selected brands, I looked back into the performance of each brand and thought of materials that have connection with my brands. 


    All of the brands are about expanding experience especially together with the Carnival Corporation the experience is not only occur on land but between land and sea. The clear different condition between land and sea is 'moisture'.
   


Natural Sponge is a sea living creature.  
By looking at it as a material,it is a very light weight but very durable material due to its complex structure.

After soaked a natural sponge into water, it shown that sponge has an ability to absorb liquid and moisture which transforms it and make it become bigger by expanding in every directions. The differences between dry and wet conditions can be observed by the decreasing in size of each hole of the sponge.  




The experiment of  dipping sponge into water color to see the way of sponge absorption.
The result was water color went up into the sponge from the dipped direction and spread within the sponge.





Another material is Sand. As any experiences always leave memories. 
The memories are both mental and physical.
 Sand is a material that can be found between land and sea. 
By looking at an amount of sand, each grain has different resolutions which gives different effect with leaving traces in both dry and wet conditions.    


Looking at the sand itself, each grain of sand is separated. 
By put some latex glue in, it became one single sheet and still keep its flexible ability.


Hamburg city was chosen for experiment on the integrated brands. 
Looking at its geography, it has a very clear connection between land and water and it is one of the available cities in Citymapper.

The aim is to recreate local events by using the selected brands with the material which is Sponge.
In this case, Instead of using the physical of the sponge I applied its performance which is the ability to infiltrate to the ability of people absorb new culture within the selected local events.

Royal Princess Cruise, one of Carnival Corporation cruise lines,
 improved by the wearable high-tech device 'The Medallion'.

Medallion provides seamless experience before, 
during and after getting on the cruise.
  Guests' information will be filled at their home so that 
the guests don't have to bring any paper with them during the trip. 

 During the trip, guests' interests, information and communication
 will be recorded and linked with the crews' Medallion, 
This helps the crews to serve their guests better. 

Guest can use the Ocean Compasses which are 
tablet, TV and screens around the cruise 
to order, plan, communicate with people on the cruise. 

The Ocean Compasses are connected with the guests' and Crews' Medallion.
The Medallion itself can be used with payment, to unlock the doors etc.


On the 15 decks cruise, Guest can enjoy many activities on the cruise 
such as Ocean Casino, Princess Theatre and swimming pools 
as well as stay comfortable in their selected room.


The Medallion operation provides very convenience experience to the guest.
From future planning to immediate ordering.    


Citymapper


Citymapper is a public transit application and mapping service.
The data is include all mode of urban transports ; 
walking, cycling, driving etc.
It is a 'real time' service which calculate many alternative routes
 for the user to choose.

The application is also provide many additional features 
to help the city life easier.


This is the example of a real experience using Citymapper 
to get around London from Oxford st. to Brick lane.

By just inserting places and time many alternative routes 
with calculated time and calories will pop-up. 
The selected route will show the details of travel.



Social Tables


Social tables is an online program to help event planner work easier
 to provide more convenience to guest to create the succeed 'face to face' event.

It is a collaborative web-based event planning platform.
The program includes 3D plan creator which can position 
provided items into it. 




This plate shows how to use the program to a local event.
From choosing the place, creating plan, designing the space 
to managing seats with guests' details and flow of people. 



Integrated Brand


All of the selected brands are service brands 
which collaborate with people, time and places.

As most of the people taking cruise trip have the purpose of 
exploring the world, learning new cultures and meeting new people 
on both during stay on board and on land days.

By bring these all together, using the Medallion as a main device,
 using Citymapper to navigate to any local event 
created by using Social Tables,can create an even better experience 
not only on land or on sea, but on both land and sea.
