Pancharee Rujiraarporn - Project 1.3

Faternal Twin

Branding

- Farm Lab -
Developing from SPACE10, as an extension to the original 4 Labs ( Digital Fabrication, Natural Interface, Shared Living and Food Lab), combining that to the idea of a living architectonic material from the Green Biz by Komatsu Seiren and the collective intelligence system by CivicWise. I'd like to introduce the company to the new Farm Lab  where a botanical garden is created to serve the intention of developing and redefining the mindset people has for farming. Every one aims to find a material that best suit the purpose of growing food at home while also living a busy life. This medium that is fully organic but does not need to be taken care of.

Content

- Components of the Lab -
Containing several programs above and under ground. The whole Lab aims to be greatly public so there are no fence. The whole area of the space serves a fully functional Lab, self-sufficient restaurant , gallery, farm and botanical garden. The Farm Lab is meant to have a timeline cycle , not being built at once but slowly starting from one space to another as if the lab itself is "growing" and "decaying".

Site

- Malta -
The site I've chosen is the island under Italy, Malta. Malta was chosen because of three main ideas; first being the hot and dry climate it has in addition to the country being an island which means limited resources, this supports the idea of the Lab developing a material that will allow people to grow crops in any climate whatsoever. Secondly, the capital of Malta, Valetta, has a very small percentage of green space in terms of their urban and therefore we'd like to get local people to be more involved with nature and more aware of the eco-living life style. Last, Malta is currently a very popular tourist attraction. We aim to use this benefit to get most variety of people to be involved in the Lab as possible.

Plan

- Zoning -
The Botanical Garden itself splits into 4 main areas, the fruit farm, plant farm, vegetable farm and the restaurant. The farms are where people  experiment with the types of vegetation that will be suitable to their type of growing medium. In addition to that, we have the restaurant area where it acts a s a main spot for tourist attraction, the ingredients used in the menus will be from the farms they grow.

Section

- Definition of Private and Public Space -
Everywhere is public, however, there are underground space and above ground space. The buildings submerged from the underground will help with not only reaching natural light source, but also connecting all the spaces together.

Elevation

- The Boundary of the Lab and the Outside -
I've chosen the height of the space to define the importance of space hierarchy. The lower grounds are less important and  the higher ones are more important. Because I've chosen to not use any fence, I chose to lift the whole space up to define a clear entrance.

Evolve

Content

- Combination and Link -
The semi-circle of hierarchy above shows the link between the previously chosen companies in my own condition. The link helps understand the flow of working process and give a clear idea of what they can become. Under that I've chosen main gimmick from each brand to push towards the next step; CivicWise and the way they gather information through collaboration, SPACE10 and the idea of changing the space used to grow crops and Komatsu Seiren and the idea of growing plants into a piece of surface and becoming an architectonic material.

Component X

- Extraction from SPACE10 -
From the chosen material of the previous phase, I've chosen hydroponics technology as the material, and therefore have extracted the idea of soil substitute as the main component of this phase. The top 2 rows is a study of the properties of different soil substitute, the PH levels that would affect plants growth. The second idea is different types of plants that can be used, for example vines that becomes part of the building structure, vegetable for sustainable living or ferns for vertical garden. The last study is the study of alternatives for hydroponics so dripping method or the aqua-ponics.

Component Y

- Extraction from Komatsu Seiren -
The idea of the man-made living architectonic material that was chosen from the previous phase was brought through here. I've decided to experiment with materials that will allow me to grow on a sheet of organic jelly with a simple gesture of pushing the seeds in. This plate shows the combination of what works and what doesn't and what we can develop them into.

The link above will lead you to a presentation that shows experimentation process and progress.

Pancharee Rujiraarporn - Project 1.1

Brand Genetics

Company 1

- Civic Wise -
This company is a platform that brings people together to tackle urban problem with localized methods. They are a group of local people who could be experts from all fields that gathers together to brainstorm a way to improve the neighborhood by viewing the problem in a very site specific and personal view.

Material

- Collective Intelligence -
The main material used by this company is a collection of knowledge from people around the local area who are from a variation of field of expertise.

Company 2

- SPACE10 -
This company is an "experimentation lab" for IKEA to play around with everything but furniture. The point of this company is to improve living standards and sustainability since we are currently struggling with over population in urbanized area and  pollution.

Material

- Hydroponics Technology -
SPACE10 have found a way to grow crops 3 times faster using much less space and water without using any soil. They pilot out a salad bar where food is served right where it grows, and therefore reducing transport waste along the way.

Company 3

- Komatsu Seiren -
This company experiments with all fields of fabric, from fashion to intelligent fabric technology. They aim to use the technology they have to develop into a company that produces not only cloth but architectural material.

Material

- GreenBiz -
Komatsu Seiren splits into a lot of company sections one of which is GreenBiz. GreenBiz is made from re-used ceramic that has been grinded and pressed into sheets of tiles. This tile can be used as roofing, wall panels or floor tile that you can grow plants on. Its properties include water absorption and the sheet also control the direction of root growth, this allows you to grow plants on your roof safely and soil-less.
