EVOLVE: MATERIAL MEMES
A nexus of complex relationships related to brands and the materials that make them

The second phase deals with the brands' identities and how the qualities are translated into a physical, tangible material. Brands such as Comme des Garcons have distinct qualities such as distortion and self- manipulated (in terms of how the clothes sits upon its wearer), which is translated through the use of its clothing materials such as polyester, wool, and rubber. Incase deals with qualities such as lightweight, portability, and protection- design that is light yet durable. Since iCarbonX does not have a tangible material or product, I decided to focus on the concept of connectivity (how information is shared from one user to another), which subsequently led to materials with qualities such as lattice-work, modules, patterns, and tessellations.

I started experimenting with materials that were light yet could act as protection. This includes sponges and knitted wool, materials that can both be distorted (to wrap or fit around other objects) or provide protection.

Next I looked at materials that could were even more lightweight and flexible- allowing it to be shaped and twisted into varying patterns and forms. This resulted in a variety of fabric experimentations.

The patterns on the fabric are all derived from a grid in order to create a "distortion". The final material explored was paper, which was more structural, allowing it to be bend and to 'stay' in specific shapes. The idea is to create a foldable shelter or tent out of this shape, which can be transformed into various shapes or 'distortions' to fit various needs.
